My interview article with benshi, Ms. Sawato Midori is now in print [映画]
My article, "Gender and the Art of Benshi: In dialogue with Sawato Midori," was recently published in Camera Obscura, a feminist film journal from Duke University Press.
Volume 26, Number 3 78, 2011
pp.155-165
You can view the abstract free and purchase the full text:

(I'm sure many university libraries subscribe to Camera Obscura.)
Ms. Sawato is the top benshi (silent film narrator) in Japan today who is soon to celebrate her 40th anniversary at the profession. I was first deeply impressed with her performance at Pordenone Silent Film Festival about a decade ago and interviewed her there. I reconnected with her in Tokyo in 2010. Based on the two interviews, the above article was written.
I like to think that it is a useful article for everyone interested in the art of benshi and Ms. Sawato. I believe that this is the first article to discuss her art from the trans-gendering perspective.
